Kite surfing and windsurfing

Wide open beaches with flat, shallow waters are ideal for kitesurfing or windsurfing, especially for beginners who have never even thought of doing either activity. Getting a south or south-westerly prevailing wind means you have the perfect conditions for getting on the board. Who knows, you may even manage to learn a trick or two!

Canoeing and kayaking

One of the best ways to view the Suffolk coast, its rivers and the Broads is by canoe. There are five estuaries that break up the coastline; the Stour, Orwell, Deben, Alde and Blyth. This has created a beautiful mosaic of landscapes with marshes and reed beds, providing a haven for birds. Exploring by canoe or kayak means you can up close and personal with the wildlife.

Sailing

Take a day out on a yacht, sailing the beautiful Suffolk waters. Many clubs offer either a full or half day of sailing, and you can opt to learn while you cruise, or sit back and relax and let the crew take you on an adventure never to forget.

Water skiing

For the adrenaline junkies, why not try out water skiing? Along with wakeboarding, it is becoming a popular recreational activity in Suffolk, but can only take place in designated zones. Visit Eastern Rivers Ski Club to see what a day water skiing will entail!

Surfing

With 50 miles of coastline and some of the best beaches in the country, there is plenty of great surfing spots in the county. The shallow sea floor also takes the sting out of the large waves, making it ideal for beginners. The best places to head to are Lowestoft, Southwold and Walberswick.

Paddleboarding

Stand up paddleboarding, or SUP is a fun water sport that the whole family can try out. With a few clubs around Suffolk offering lessons, you don’t need to worry if you have never tried it before – within no time you will be a pro! You can start off with some taster sessions to try it out first, and even enjoy tours of the beautiful rivers of Suffolk by SUP.
